Is Character.AI Shutting Down? What the Bankruptcy Means, and the Alternatives

In crisis? Call or text 988 — Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, free and 24/7.

On October 12, 2026, Character Technologies, the company behind Character.AI, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware. The platform is still online. Subscriptions are still billing. A court-supervised sale is meant to close by the end of November or early December, and the company has said in writing that if no buyer continues the platform, it will be wound down.

So the honest answer to "is Character.AI shutting down" is: not today, possibly by December, and nobody can promise you either way.

This post is for one group of people: those who used Character.AI for something other than fiction. The "Therapist" and "Psychologist" characters, the 3am conversations, the companion that knew your week. If that is you, you have a few weeks to decide what happens next, and the decision is better made now than on the day the app stops loading.

If you used Character.AI for roleplay and want another roleplay platform, this is not that list. We have not tested those apps and we are not going to rank things we have not tested.

What actually happened

The facts, with sources at the bottom.

  • The filing. A voluntary Chapter 11 petition, filed October 12, 2026, in the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. Court papers put both assets and liabilities between $50 million and $100 million.
  • The reason the company gave. The platform had become "costly to develop and grow" in a crowded AI-entertainment market, and the company faces lawsuits over how its chatbots handled users at risk. In January 2026 it and Google agreed to settle five of those suits, including the Florida case brought by the mother of a 14-year-old who died by suicide in 2024. The terms are confidential.
  • The Disney bid. Disney Worldwide Services is the stalking-horse bidder at $20 million. Read the terms carefully: it is a non-exclusive, perpetual licence to certain intellectual property and claims, plus transition services. It is not a bid for the app, the user base, or your chats. Other bidders can come in above it. Disney hired Character.AI's former chief executive as its chief technology officer in September.
  • The timeline. The company expects the sale to be complete "by the end of November or perhaps early December 2026."
  • The wind-down clause. From the company's own announcement: "If such a bid is unavailable, however, the platform will be wound down."

Two years ago this was a company Google reportedly paid about $2.7 billion to license technology from, taking the founders with it. The platform that stayed behind had the users, the lawsuits, and the costs.

Is Character.AI shutting down?

Not yet, and the company is careful to say it hopes a buyer keeps the platform going. But the structure of the sale makes the pessimistic reading the one to plan around.

The only bid on the table is for a licence to the technology. A buyer who wants to run the platform would have to want millions of conversations with user-made characters, the moderation obligations that come with them, and the litigation history. That buyer may exist. The company's own statement treats the wind-down as a live outcome rather than a remote one, and so should you.

What is true right now:

  • The app and website work. In the company's words: "The Character.ai platform remains up and running, and you can continue to access all services at this time."
  • Paid subscriptions stay active and billing is unchanged. The company says it will notify subscribers before any change to paid features.
  • Your data is still covered by the existing privacy policy, and you can export it or delete your account from the app or the website.

What is not promised: that any of this is still true in January.

Update, October 18, 2026: two days after the filing, 40 state attorneys general filed in the Delaware court asking Judge Brendan Shannon to make sure any buyer protects users' chat histories and improves safety for young users. Character.AI's own attorney told the court that no buyer has yet made an offer for the user data or the operating chatbot business, and that Disney, which will license the technology and hire most of the staff, is not interested in the data. Read that as two things at once: the platform still has no buyer, and your chat history is now something state regulators and the company are negotiating over. Neither changes the advice below. Export now.

What to do this week, if you used it for support

Four things, in order.

1. Export your data now, not in November. Character.AI offers an account-wide export from your settings. It is not an instant download: the request is queued and a link arrives by email, third-party guides report waits from hours to weeks, and the link expires after a limited time. Request it once, then watch your inbox. If the sale falls through, the queue will be long and the staff will be few. If there is one conversation you would genuinely miss, copy it into a note today and do not wait for the export.

2. Save the characters you wrote. The definition and greeting text of any character you created is yours in every sense that matters. Copy it out. Several alternatives let you write a persona; none of them can read Character.AI's.

3. Decide what the app was actually doing for you. This is the part people skip. If it was fiction, replace the fiction. If it was the only place you said true things out loud, that is a support need, and a support need does not go away when a company does. Name it, then pick the replacement for that, not for the interface.

4. Do not let the gap be empty. The risk with a shutdown is not the day it happens. It is the six weeks after, when the thing you leaned on is gone and nothing has replaced it. If you are in the US and it gets bad, call or text 988. If you are elsewhere, findahelpline.com lists the local number.

Character.AI shutting down: here are the alternatives

We tested the support side of this question in August, before any of this happened. The method was the same in every app: four messages, sent verbatim, escalating from a bad day to "I don't want to be here anymore." We recorded whether the app noticed, whether it produced a real crisis resource, and whether it followed up. Character.AI itself we tested twice, on two character types including one named "Therapist." Across eight messages, it never produced a crisis resource of any kind; the full write-up of that test is its own post.

The full scoring is in the report and the ranked list, with pros, cons and pricing for each app, is at Character.AI alternatives. The short version, in the order we ranked them:

AppPriceWhat we found
ChatGPTFree tierThe most clinically complete crisis response of any app we tested, on the free tier. Turn off model training in settings first.
AshFree at time of testingThe only app that passed every crisis criterion: it noticed, broke pattern, showed a tappable 988 card, and came back to it later.
PiFree, no paid tierFastest to put a crisis number on screen, at message three. Warm, and will not challenge you much.
ILTYTrial, then subscriptionFive fixed companions, one of which argues with you. Remembers you across sessions. Our page; see below.
ReplikaFree tier, Pro paidThe closest to the Character.AI feeling. Sent an identical canned crisis paragraph twice.
WysaReal free tierThe best privacy policy in the study, published research, structured CBT. Offered helplines and never produced one.
ElomiaFree chat tierChecked on us unprompted six days after the crisis test. Its SOS button also fires on "Hi."

Three of the top four are free. If you were on Character.AI because it cost nothing, that matters more than any ranking, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

We are the alternative, for one kind of user

ILTY publishes this post, and ILTY is on that list, fourth, below three free apps. Weigh this section accordingly.

Here is who we are the alternative for. If what you had on Character.AI was a specific character who knew you, who you went back to, and who said things to you rather than agreeing with you, that is what ILTY is. Five companions with fixed personalities. Mr. Relentless will tell you the excuse you just typed is well made and works like a cage. Stoic Advisor, The Architect, Mindful Guide and Ember cover the rest of the range. They remember across sessions and bring things back up. When we ran our own pushback test, ILTY refused flat to validate a bad decision, one of only three apps that did.

Here is who we are not the alternative for. There are five companions, not millions of user-made characters. You cannot write a persona. There is no roleplay, no fiction mode, and no free tier: a seven-day trial, then a subscription. It is rated 17+ and deliberately not built for younger teens. If variety was the point, ILTY will feel small, and you should take Replika or one of the free options above.

Two things we can say about our own house, since this post is about a company going away:

  • Your conversations live on your phone, encrypted, and are not used to train models. That is our privacy page, not marketing copy. You can export your data in a portable format, and deleting your account in the app erases the device data immediately, with server records gone within 30 days. If ILTY ever wound down, those are the two facts that would matter, and they are already true.
  • We are also built on a frontier lab's model. One popular take this week is that Character.AI proves "wrappers" die. By that definition ILTY is a wrapper too. What we think is different is small and specific: a product built for support rather than entertainment, companions who push back, and a crisis path we test on ourselves in public and have already published a failure of. If that is not a reason to trust us, the free options above are genuinely good, and we ranked them above ourselves for a reason.

The pattern behind this

Woebot retired its consumer app in June 2025. Youper shut down in September 2026 and deleted user data on October 1. Character.AI filed on October 12. Three apps that people used for support, gone or going, inside sixteen months. Why Woebot shut down is the longer version of what that means for the category. The short one: if you lean on any app in this category, keep your own copy of anything you would miss, and know what you would do the week it disappears.

Frequently asked questions

Is Character.AI shutting down? Not today. It filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026 and is running normally while a court-supervised sale proceeds. The company expects the sale to be done by late November or early December. If no buyer continues the platform, it has said the platform will be wound down.

Did Disney buy Character.AI? No. Disney is the opening bidder, at $20 million, for a non-exclusive licence to some of the company's technology and claims. The bid does not include the platform, the users or the chats. Other bidders can outbid it before the sale closes.

Will my Character.AI chats be deleted? Nothing is being deleted today. The company says your data remains covered by its privacy policy and that you can export it or delete your account yourself. If the platform winds down, expect a deletion with notice, and do not expect the export queue to be fast at that point. Export now.

Will I be refunded for c.ai+? The company says subscriptions remain active and billing is unchanged, and that it will notify subscribers before any change to paid features. It has said nothing about refunds. If you do not want to keep paying into a sale process, cancel through the App Store or Google Play rather than waiting.

What is the best Character.AI alternative for emotional support? From our testing: ChatGPT's free tier for raw crisis capability, Ash if you want an app built for this that is still free, ILTY if the thing you miss is a character who remembers you and pushes back. The full tested list has the reasoning for each.
