7 Apps to Vent to a Stranger (2026)

The appeal of a stranger is simple: no history, no consequences, no follow-up questions next week. The catch is that 'a stranger' can mean a trained volunteer, three matched peers in a moderated room, a crowd reading your letter, or whoever is in an anonymous chat at 2am. These are not the same experience. This list is ranked by who is actually on the other end. Want an AI, a website, or the full venting category instead? See venting apps and venting websites.

How we evaluated these apps

What counts as 'a stranger': a real person you have no relationship with, reached through the app. That rules out AI companions as the main pick (we make one, and it is listed last for exactly that reason) and it rules out apps that only connect you with people you already know. Every entry below puts a human you have never met on the other end, in one of four shapes: one trained listener, a small matched group, a community that replies to letters, or an open anonymous chat.

Where the facts come from: the app entries reuse the testing and store-listing verification we did for the venting apps roundup (each app used for 14+ days across seeded venting scenarios; pricing, platforms, ratings and review counts recorded from the App Store, Google Play or vendor page in July 2026) and the browser-only verification from the venting websites roundup (August 2026). Nothing was re-verified for this page; where a listing has changed since, the parent roundup will be corrected first. We assembled and reviewed this page on October 10, 2026.

Ranking logic: a stranger whose whole job is to listen (7 Cups) beats a stranger who happens to be in the room (open chat), and a moderated room beats an unmoderated one. Free and no-account options rank above ones with a gate, all else equal. Platform coverage is noted per entry because two of the biggest options are single-platform.

A line we will not blur: none of these is a crisis service, and a stranger in an app is not the right call if what you need to say is about hurting yourself. In the US, call or text 988. The FAQ at the end covers this plainly.

Disclosure

ILTY is the publisher of this roundup, and ILTY is on the list, at the bottom. ILTY is an AI companion, not a stranger: it remembers you across sessions, which is the opposite of the clean-slate appeal that brings people to this search. We put it last and say so, and we rank 7 Cups, Supportiv and Sincerely above it for the job this page is about. Every competitor fact here comes from the public listings and our earlier hands-on testing documented on the venting apps page; none of these companies has any relationship with us.

The research behind this

Rankings on this page draw on The 2026 State of AI Mental Health Apps, our own study of 15 apps across 8 criteria. Crisis handling was tested by hand: the same four escalating messages typed into every app, screenshots kept. Four of them never produced a crisis number. Every score is published with the reasoning behind it, including ILTY’s, and the rubric is CC-BY if you would rather score apps yourself.

The apps, in detail

#1 · 7 Cups

Best for: A single stranger whose only job is to listen to you

One trained volunteer listener, one-on-one, free.

If 'vent to a stranger' means 'I want one person to actually listen', this is the strongest option on the list. The trained-listener model is the closest thing to a stranger who is good at this. The trade is variability: the person you get is whoever is free tonight.

Strengths

  • +Actual humans, trained in active listening, available around the clock for free
  • +One-to-one rather than a group or a feed: a single stranger giving you their full attention
  • +Listeners follow a code of conduct with moderators above them, which is more structure than any anonymous chat room
  • +Anonymous by default: you sign up with a username, not your identity

Where it falls short

  • −Listener quality varies a lot; some are excellent, some paste a template
  • −Matching can take anywhere from 0 to 30+ minutes depending on the hour
  • −Listeners are not therapists and are not trained for crisis
  • −Some users report listeners disappearing mid-conversation

Pricing

Free for peer-listener support. ~$150/mo for the separate licensed-therapist tier (varies by therapist).

Platforms

Web, Android. The iOS App Store listing returned a 404 when we re-verified in July 2026, so the browser is the way in on iPhone.

vs. ILTY

A 7 Cups listener is a real person, which ILTY cannot be and does not claim to be. ILTY is the same companion every time and never has a queue; 7 Cups is a different human each time, sometimes a great one.

#2 · Supportiv

Best for: Strangers who are going through your specific problem right now

Matched into a small moderated chat with strangers dealing with the same thing, no account.

The pick when the point of a stranger is 'someone who has been exactly here'. Instead of broadcasting to a feed, you are in a room of three to five people matched on your problem, with a moderator keeping it from going sideways. Browser-only and account-free, which is why it also tops our venting websites list.

Strengths

  • +You type what is wrong and it matches you into a small group on that topic in about a minute
  • +Moderated, which is the difference between a peer group and a comment section
  • +No signup and no account for basic use, so it works at the hour you need it
  • +Real humans in real time, not letters and not AI

Where it falls short

  • −Group format: you are not getting one person's undivided attention
  • −The chat ends when the others log off; there is no continuity
  • −Best when the vent has a topic (a breakup, a sick parent); less useful for a general bad day

Pricing

Free for basic use; some premium features exist (varies).

Platforms

Web (mobile-responsive). Nothing to install.

vs. ILTY

Supportiv gives you other humans in the same situation; ILTY gives you one companion that pushes back. If what you need is to not feel like the only person this is happening to, Supportiv is the better answer and it is free.

#3 · Sincerely: Vent & Confess

Best for: Writing 300 words to strangers and getting human replies back

Write an anonymous letter; strangers reply with care, over hours rather than minutes.

The strongest 'letter to strangers' option. The format is closer to dropping a note into a hat that strangers answer than to chatting. If your version of venting is 'I need to write this out and have someone human read it', Sincerely is built for exactly that.

Strengths

  • +Large, established community, so replies usually arrive quickly
  • +The letter format pulls out real disclosure instead of one-line venting
  • +Fully anonymous; no real-name profile
  • +Free with no subscription gate on the core experience

Where it falls short

  • −Asynchronous by design: you write, then wait
  • −Reply quality varies; some letters get thoughtful responses, others get a generic hug emoji
  • −iOS only
  • −Replies are well-meaning strangers, not trained ones

Pricing

Free. Optional premium in-app purchases (Sincerely Club from $9.99/mo); the core letters-and-replies experience has no paywall.

Platforms

iOS only (4.7 stars, 33,900+ reviews as of July 2026).

vs. ILTY

Sincerely for human replies to a letter, on their schedule. ILTY for a real-time conversation that ends with something to do, on yours.

#4 · VentSpace

Best for: Typing into something anonymous with zero friction

Anonymous text venting with no account, no ads and no frills.

The cleanest 'I just want to anonymously type and not deal with anything else' option. No listener matching, no community gamification, no account. The price of that simplicity is that a stranger may or may not answer.

Strengths

  • +No identifying information required to register
  • +A stated commitment that posts and personal information are not shared
  • +No premium tier and no upselling
  • +Cross-platform, which is rare in this category

Where it falls short

  • −Smaller community than Sincerely or Supportiv, so replies can be slow or absent
  • −Fewer features than the commercial options
  • −An independent product with less long-term-stability assurance
  • −Built for occasional venting, not ongoing support

Pricing

Free.

Platforms

iOS, Android, Windows.

vs. ILTY

VentSpace for maximum privacy and zero setup. ILTY for an account-based companion that always answers and remembers.

#5 · Virtual Friend Shoulder: Vent

Best for: A free anonymous chat with strangers on Android, right now

The largest anonymous venting chat on Android. Big, free, uneven.

If you are on Android and want strangers available at any hour, this is the most-used option in the category. Go in knowing the rating is earned: the community is real and active, and the experience is uneven. On iPhone, Sincerely or VentSpace are the better fits.

Strengths

  • +Huge Android user base, so someone is usually there
  • +Anonymous by design
  • +Free
  • +Live conversation, not a feed you post into

Where it falls short

  • −The 3.1-star rating is honest: moderation and conversation quality are inconsistent
  • −Android only
  • −Ad-supported
  • −Casual venting only; not built for serious mental-health concerns

Pricing

Free (with ads).

Platforms

Android only (3.1 stars, 52,000+ reviews as of July 2026).

vs. ILTY

Virtual Friend Shoulder for free, live, anonymous strangers on Android. ILTY for a paid AI companion on iOS and Android that redirects the vent into action.

#6 · Reddit (r/offmychest and similar)

Best for: Getting it out of your head at 3am when nothing else is staffed

Post it publicly and anonymously; strangers reply over hours, or not at all.

Included because it is honestly what a lot of people mean by venting to strangers, and leaving it off would be pretending. Writing it out has value even with no reply. Use a throwaway, and know that what you post is public and durable.

Strengths

  • +Always available; no matching and no queue
  • +Genuinely anonymous with a throwaway account
  • +Sometimes the reply that helps most comes from a stranger who lived the same thing

Where it falls short

  • −Public and permanent, which is a different privacy posture from everything above
  • −Unmoderated at the individual-comment level in practice; replies can be careless or hostile
  • −You may get nothing back at all

Pricing

Free.

Platforms

Web, iOS, Android.

vs. ILTY

A forum gives you the chance of being recognised by a stranger who has been there, and the chance of being ignored or answered badly in public. ILTY is private and always answers, which is a smaller and more predictable thing.

#7 · ILTY

Best for: The night you want to talk and would rather not be remembered by a person, but do want to be remembered by the conversation

Not a stranger. An AI companion that remembers you, for the nights nobody human is online.

Listed last on purpose. The reason people search for a stranger is usually that a stranger has no stake in them and no memory of them. ILTY has a memory, and that is its whole point. If what you want is to be heard once by a human and then disappear, pick 7 Cups or Supportiv. If what you want is to vent and then be held to what you said you would do, that is the one job ILTY does that no stranger will.

Strengths

  • +Answers immediately, at any hour, with no queue and no dependence on who is online
  • +Five companions from blunt (Mr. Relentless) to gentle (Mindful Guide), so you choose the tone
  • +Ends the conversation with a concrete next step and remembers it, which strangers by definition do not

Where it falls short

  • −It is an AI, not a person: if the point of a stranger is that a human hears you, this does not deliver that
  • −It remembers you across sessions, which is the opposite of the clean slate some people come here for
  • −Paid after onboarding, where most of this list is free

Pricing

Free download. Subscription required after onboarding: $12.99/mo or $99.99/yr (1-week free trial).

Platforms

iOS, Android.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to vent to strangers online?

Safer on some of these than others, and 'anonymous' is not the same as 'private'. A moderated service (7 Cups, Supportiv) has someone responsible for the room; an open chat or a public forum does not, and a Reddit post is public and permanent. On every option, keep names, workplaces and locations out of what you write, and treat anything a stranger tells you to do as a stranger's opinion. If someone in a venting app pushes for contact outside the app, leave. Our piece on what 'anonymous' actually means in venting apps covers the privacy side in detail.

What is the best app to vent to a stranger for free?

7 Cups, if you want one trained listener's attention: the listener service is free, and only the separate therapist tier costs money. Supportiv, if you want a few strangers who are going through the same thing, with nothing to install and no account. Sincerely, if you would rather write a letter and get replies over time, and you are on iPhone. All three were free for the core experience when we verified them in July and August 2026.

Is venting to a stranger better than venting to a friend?

It is different, not better. A stranger has no history with you, will not bring it up next month, and cannot take sides, which is exactly why it feels lighter. A friend remembers, which is a cost in the moment and an asset later. If you keep choosing strangers because every friend has heard this one before, that is worth noticing: it usually means the vent has become a loop, and a loop needs a next step, not another listener. Why venting feels good and then doesn't goes into that.

What if what I need to say is about hurting myself?

Then a stranger in a venting app is the wrong place, and none of the services above is a crisis line. In the US, call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), any hour. If you are outside the US, your country's crisis line is the right call. Peer listeners and chat moderators are not trained for this and will usually redirect you to the same number; go there first.
