Paying attention to the present moment, on purpose, without judgment—a practice that reduces anxiety and improves emotional regulation.
Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to what's happening right now—your thoughts, feelings, body sensations, surroundings—without judging any of it as good or bad. It sounds simple. It's not.
The research on mindfulness is extensive. Regular practice has been shown to reduce anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and stress. It physically changes brain structure, increasing gray matter in areas associated with emotional regulation and decreasing activity in the amygdala (your brain's alarm center).
Mindfulness isn't about emptying your mind or achieving bliss. It's about noticing what's happening without getting swept up in it. When you're mindful, you can observe 'I'm having an anxious thought' instead of becoming the anxious thought.
ILTY incorporates mindfulness principles by helping you observe your thoughts and feelings from a slight distance. Rather than diving straight into problem-solving, ILTY sometimes helps you just notice what you're experiencing—which often naturally reduces its intensity.
During a stressful moment, instead of being consumed by the thought 'everything is falling apart,' mindfulness lets you notice: 'I'm having the thought that everything is falling apart. I notice tension in my chest. I notice the urge to panic.' This small shift creates space between stimulus and response.
