The ability to manage and respond to emotional experiences in healthy ways, rather than being controlled by them.
Emotional regulation is your ability to manage emotional responses. Not suppress them, not ignore them, not 'just think positive'—but actually experience emotions without being overwhelmed or controlled by them.
Good emotional regulation doesn't mean never feeling angry, sad, or anxious. It means being able to: recognize what you're feeling, understand why, tolerate the discomfort, choose your response rather than reacting automatically, and recover within a reasonable timeframe.
Poor emotional regulation (dysregulation) often looks like: emotional outbursts disproportionate to the situation, prolonged recovery from emotional events, avoidance of any situation that might trigger feelings, or numbing through substances, screens, or overwork.
ILTY actively supports emotional regulation by helping you identify what you're feeling (often harder than it sounds), understand the triggers, and develop strategies for managing intensity. Over time, regular processing with ILTY can improve your baseline regulation capacity.
You receive critical feedback at work. Dysregulated response: immediately catastrophize, spend three hours unable to focus, snap at your partner that evening. Regulated response: notice the sting, acknowledge the disappointment, evaluate what's valid, decide what action to take, and move on within a reasonable time.

The zone where you can experience emotions without becoming overwhelmed (hyperarousal) or shutting down (hypoarousal).
When emotions become so intense that your ability to think, communicate, and cope is temporarily overwhelmed.
Paying attention to the present moment, on purpose, without judgment—a practice that reduces anxiety and improves emotional regulation.
Understanding concepts is valuable. Applying them to your own life is where the change happens. ILTY helps you do both.
