How ILTY Actually Works (Behind the Scenes)
You open ILTY. You type "I'm feeling anxious about tomorrow." Within seconds, you receive a response that feels understanding, that asks the right questions, that helps you think through what you're feeling.
How does that actually work? What's happening behind the scenes?
We believe in transparency. Here's an honest look at how ILTY works—the technology, the approach, the limitations, and what we're trying to accomplish.
The Technology Foundation
ILTY is built on large language model (LLM) technology—the same fundamental technology behind tools like ChatGPT. But what you see when you use ILTY is quite different from a general-purpose AI.
Why We're Different from Generic AI
You could technically talk to any AI chatbot about your feelings. Some people do. But generic AI isn't designed for emotional support. It's designed to answer questions, complete tasks, and be helpful in a broad sense.
ILTY is specifically designed for mental health conversations. This means:
Specialized training and fine-tuning: Our models are trained to recognize emotional language, understand mental health contexts, and respond with appropriate sensitivity.
Therapeutic frameworks: ILTY's responses draw on evidence-based approaches—cognitive-behavioral techniques, mindfulness principles, motivational interviewing—without trying to be a replacement for therapy.
Safety guardrails: We have systems to recognize crisis situations and direct people to appropriate human help. We know our limitations.
Emotional intelligence: Rather than jumping to solutions, ILTY is designed to listen, validate, and help you explore your feelings—the way a good conversation partner would.
How a Conversation Works
When you message ILTY, here's what happens:
Understanding Your Input
ILTY analyzes your message on multiple levels:
- Literal content: What you're explicitly saying
- Emotional subtext: The feelings behind the words
- Context: Where this fits in the conversation history
- Risk indicators: Signs that you might need more than AI can provide
This isn't simple keyword matching. It's understanding language the way humans do—recognizing that "I'm fine" might not actually mean fine, that "I guess I'm just tired" might be covering something deeper.
Generating a Response
Based on this understanding, ILTY generates a response designed to:
- Validate your experience: Acknowledge what you're feeling without judgment
- Ask clarifying questions: Help you articulate what's really going on
- Offer perspective: Gently challenge unhelpful thinking patterns when appropriate
- Suggest practical steps: Provide actionable ideas when you're ready for them
- Know when not to advise: Sometimes you just need to be heard
The response isn't pulled from a database of pre-written answers. It's generated specifically for your situation, in the context of your conversation.
Conversation Memory
ILTY remembers your conversation within a session. This means it can:
- Reference what you said earlier
- Notice patterns in your thinking
- Build on previous points
- Avoid asking you to repeat yourself
Currently, ILTY doesn't maintain long-term memory between sessions. Each conversation starts fresh. This is a privacy feature—your conversations aren't stored indefinitely—but it means you might need to re-establish context in new sessions.
What ILTY Is Actually Good At
Daily Emotional Processing
Life throws things at you constantly. A frustrating interaction at work. A conversation that's bothering you. Vague anxiety about the future. Most of this doesn't rise to the level of "I need to call my therapist," but it still accumulates.
ILTY provides a place to process these daily experiences. Talk through what happened. Understand why it's affecting you. Gain some perspective. Move on with your day.
Clarifying Your Thoughts
Sometimes you don't know what you're feeling until you try to articulate it. ILTY provides a non-judgmental space to think out loud. Often, the act of explaining your situation to someone (even an AI) helps you understand it better yourself.
Practicing New Perspectives
Working on cognitive reframing? Trying to catch catastrophic thinking? ILTY can help you practice. It's a safe space to work through thought patterns without fear of being judged.
Late-Night Support
Therapists have office hours. Friends have boundaries. When it's 2am and you're spiraling, ILTY is there. Not to replace human connection, but to provide something when nothing else is available.
Preparation and Debriefing
Use ILTY before a difficult conversation to think through what you want to say. Use it after to process what happened. It's like having a thinking partner available whenever you need one.
What ILTY Can't Do
We're going to be direct about our limitations:
We're Not Therapy
ILTY doesn't replace professional mental health treatment. We can't:
- Diagnose conditions
- Create treatment plans
- Prescribe or advise on medication
- Provide the deep, ongoing relationship that therapy offers
- Handle complex trauma work
If you need therapy, please get therapy. ILTY is a supplement, not a substitute.
We Can't Handle Crisis
If you're in danger, having thoughts of suicide, or in a mental health emergency, ILTY isn't the right resource. We have systems to recognize crisis situations and direct you to appropriate help (like the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), but AI isn't equipped to manage acute crisis.
We Don't Know You Like a Human Would
A therapist who's worked with you for months understands your history, patterns, triggers, and progress. ILTY starts each conversation relatively fresh. We can't provide the continuity and depth that a human relationship offers.
We Can Be Wrong
AI makes mistakes. It can misunderstand what you mean, offer unhelpful suggestions, or miss important nuances. If something ILTY says doesn't feel right, trust your judgment.
Our Approach to Privacy
Mental health is deeply personal. Here's how we handle your data:
Conversations aren't sold or shared: Your conversations don't train advertising algorithms or get shared with third parties.
We don't store indefinitely: Conversation data isn't kept forever. Details about our retention policies are in our privacy policy.
No connection to your workplace, insurance, or other systems: ILTY is completely separate from any professional or institutional contexts.
You can be fully honest: We're not going to tell anyone what you said. You can vent about your boss, complain about your family, or express thoughts you'd never say out loud.
The Philosophy Behind ILTY
We built ILTY based on a few core beliefs:
Talking Helps
The simple act of putting your feelings into words—even to an AI—has psychological benefits. It's called "affect labeling," and research shows it reduces the intensity of negative emotions.
Everyone Deserves Support
Not everyone can afford therapy. Not everyone has friends available at 2am. Not everyone feels comfortable being vulnerable with humans. We believe everyone deserves access to emotional support.
AI Has a Role
AI isn't replacing human connection. But it can fill gaps—times when human support isn't available, affordable, or comfortable. Used thoughtfully, AI can be part of a mental health toolkit.
Honesty Matters
We're not trying to convince you AI is as good as a human therapist. It's not. We're trying to provide something useful within appropriate limitations, and be honest about what those limitations are.
How to Get the Most from ILTY
Be Honest
The more honestly you share, the more helpful ILTY can be. There's no judgment here.
Be Specific
"I'm feeling bad" gives ILTY less to work with than "I've been dreading this meeting with my manager all week because I think she's going to criticize my project."
Push Back
If ILTY's response doesn't feel right, say so. "That's not quite what I mean" or "I don't think that applies to my situation" helps redirect the conversation.
Use It Regularly
Like any tool, ILTY works better with regular use. Daily check-ins can prevent emotional buildup and help you maintain awareness of your mental state.
Know When to Seek Human Help
If you're dealing with something serious, if you're in crisis, or if ILTY just isn't cutting it—please reach out to a human. A therapist, a crisis line, a trusted friend. AI has a role, but humans do too.
Curious what ILTY actually feels like? The only way to know is to try it. Start a conversation and see if it helps.
